Bushwhacking

Four inches of powder fell in the night. The day dawned clear and windless, cold but not too cold (about 15 degrees). A perfect day for snowshoeing. Today I didn't follow the usual paths--I bushwhacked through the winter woods, across marshes and ponds that I can't access in summertime. The snow hid lots of interesting bumps and hummocks, and revealed the tracks of nocturnal animals: birds, rabbits, voles, and fox. Watson dashed about, nose to the ground, excited to be exploring new territory.
